Windows 10 is officially launched and it's already on its way to many people's computers or devices. If you are eligible, you can go ahead and upgrade your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 computer or device to Windows 10, either by using the reservation app, or theMedia Creation Tool offered by Microsoft. If you are not satisfied with how the reservation app works and the fact that it is slow to provide you with an upgrade, then the Media Creation Tool is your only chance of getting Windows 10 today. Here's how to use it to upgrade your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 computer, today:
Things To Keep In Mind
Before you decide whether or not to upgrade to Windows 10, be sure to read the Windows 10 Specifications on the Microsoft website, and review its system requirements. Windows 10 demands the following:
- Processor: 1 GHz or faster, single core or multi-core
- RAM: 1 GB for the 32-bit version or 2GB for the 64-bit one
Free hard disk space: 16 GB for the 32-bit version or 20 GB for the 64-bit version- Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
- A Microsoft account and Internet access
During the upgrade, Windows 10 automatically checks your product key, so there's no need for you to enter it again.
You also need to have a working Internet connection available, so that Windows 10 can download its installation files as well as double check your Microsoft account details and download the latest updates available.
If you used the reservation app to start the upgrade, then all the installation files required for Windows 10 are already downloaded on your hard drive, so you can just skip to the next section of this guide.
If you didn't get the reservation app or if it didn't yet allow you to start the upgrade, you can fallback to the Media Creation Tool. For information on where to get it and how to use it, check the first two sections of this guide: How To Download Windows 10 And Create Your Own Installation Media. Once you've downloaded and ran Media Creation Tool, all you need to do is select the option called "Upgrade this PC now".
Once you've pressed Next, the Windows 10 installation files are downloaded. When they are all ready, you can go ahead and begin the actual upgrade process.
Note that, no matter if you use the reservation app or the Media Creation Tool, once you begin the upgrade, the steps you'll need to walk through are all identical.
How To Upgrade Windows 7 Or Windows 8.1 To Windows 10
The first thing you need to do in order to start the upgrade process is to accept the license terms. Read them all carefully and, if you agree with them, click or tap on Accept.
The installer will check if there are any new Windows updates available.
Another few minutes are now required for the installer to check if everything is OK and your computer or device is ready to begin the upgrade.
By default, the Media Creation Tool chooses to keep your personal files and apps before installing Windows 10.
If you want to change this setting, click or tap "Change what to keep". Several choices will be listed: "Keep personal files and apps, Keep personal files only" or keep Nothing. Choose the option you prefer and then click or tap on Next.
The Windows 10 installer will show you what you chose to keep at the previous step. Click or tap on Install to continue. Otherwise, click or tap on "Change what to keep" and make a new selection.
Now, the Windows 10 installation starts. You are informed that the process might take a while and your computer or device will restart several times. It's a perfect time to have a coffee and get ready for Windows 10. :)
After the first restart, you are shown the Upgrading Windows message and a progress circle. Wait for the upgrade to be performed. Several restarts are likely to be performed, again.
Once the upgrade is complete , your username is displayed. If you have used a local account in the past, you are asked to enter its password and click or tap Next. If you have used a Microsoft account, select it and click or tap Next.
Then, you are greeted with a first-time setup message, where you can select whether you want to use the Windows 10 recommended settings or customize each setting individually. We prefer to customize everything in detail, so let's click or tap Customize settings and review each setting together.
Windows 10 asks if you agree to send information such as contacts and calendar details, typing data or your location to Microsoft and/or some of their trusted partners. Also, you need to decide whether to let apps use your advertising ID for experiences across apps. For each type of information, you can use the appropriate switch in order to send it or not. When you're done, press Next.
You are now able to set whether you want to use SmartScreen to protect you against malicious content and downloads. We recommend that you enable this feature. Then, you can set whether you want to use page prediction to improve reading and speed up web browsing. Last but not least you are asked to set whether you want to automatically connect to suggested open WiFi hotspots, automatically connect to networks shared by your contacts and send error and diagnostic information to Microsoft. Change the things you are interested in and click or tap Next.
The Windows 10 installer will now show you an overview of the new apps and features it offers compared to the previous versions of Windows. When you're done reading what's new, click or tap Next to proceed to the next step.
Now that everything is set, Windows 10 will take its time to prepare your computer or device, your apps and all the settings. The process may also involve another restart.
When it's done, you are logged into Windows 10 and you can view your new Desktop.
Congrats, you have upgraded to the newest Windows flavor: Windows 10!
