Whatsapp is a popular text message and media sharing app available for smartphones. Whatsapp creates a chat history backup on a daily basis and stores all the chats/messages in the database called “msgstore.db.crypt” on android phones. This “msgstore.db.crypt”stores all the chats and messages that you have done with your Whatsapp contacts. This database can be found in “sdcard>Whatsapp>Databases”. This chat history database will be deleted if you delete your Whatsapp account or you manually deleted it or the conversation backup is never done. But don’t worry there is still an option that will let you restore your Whatsapp account with all deleted messages. I am trying to say that I will tell you a trick through which you can get back this “msgstore.db.crypt” database file. After getting this file back you can easily restore your Whatsapp messages. This tutorial applies to android, blackberry, iOS and Windows phone.
Your phone is using a SD card or internal mass storage in which Whatsapp stores its chat history and media files. So if after the chat history is deleted do not copy anything in the SD card or internal mass storage. After deletion the database file still resides in the storage, if you copy any file in the storage then the deleted file will be overwritten and can’t be recovered. So if the message backup file is deleted then do not copy other files to SD card, do not use camera to click pictures because this will also overwrite the file. Now follow the steps below.

Recover Messages From A Deleted Whatsapp Account
Note: This tutorial will only work for phones running android 2.3 Gingerbread. Mass storage mode is removed from android 4.0 and above. So in this case you can use recovery software like Wondershare Dr. Fone or can store WhatsApp backup to Google Drive. Storing WhatsApp chats to Google Drive is a good option if you don't want to lose your chats anymore. Also in case of a theft you can restore the chats on a new phone without the msgstore.db.crypt.
- Uninstall Whatsapp.
- Download and install Recuva for Windows from here.
- Connect the SD card to PC by using a card reader or SDHC adapter for micro sd on laptops.
- Now right click on the SD card in ‘My Computer’ and choose ‘scan for deleted files’. Let Recuva to scan for deleted files.
- After scan is complete recuva will show all the list of deleted files on sdcard. A green circle in Recuva means that file can be recovered.
- In recuva you need to find the file “msgstore.db.crypt”. Put a check mark on it.
- Click ‘Recover’ on the bottom right and choose ‘Desktop’.
- The file will be recovered to the desktop.
- Now copy this file in “sdcard>Whatsapp>Databases”.
- Now insert the SD card in the smartphone.
- Re-install Whatsapp on your android smartphone. In application settings clear Whatsapp data.
- Now open Whatsapp. Tap “Agree and continue”. Then enter your phone number.
- In the next step, you will be asked to restore messages. Tap ‘Restore’ to get back all your deleted messages and chat history.
- Finally, enter username and tap OK. After initialization click ‘Continue’ to use the app.
